MWH Constructors Selected by the City of Austin as Construction Manager-at-Risk for Water Treatment Plant No. 4

Broomfield, Colo., November 16, 2009 – MWH, the global wet infrastructure sector leader and provider of environmental engineering, construction and strategic consulting services, announced today that it has been selected to serve as construction manager-at-risk (CMAR) for the City of Austin’s Water Treatment Plant No. 4.  Final design on the new plant, which will be constructed on Bullick Hollow Road near Lake Travis, is currently underway.

The Austin City Council voted to hire MWH as the CMAR for the new Water Treatment Plant No. 4, and a contract was recently signed authorizing the firm to conduct $5.385 million of preconstruction activities.

Plans for the plant, to be located on 92 acres in northwest Austin, include a raw water intake and tunnels, pump stations, pipelines and water treatment facilities. According to the City of Austin, the first phase of the plant will produce 50 million gallons of water a day and will be operational by 2014.

The plant, after all the phases are built, is expected to cost $508 million and produce 300 million gallons of water a day to meet the city’s growth and infrastructure demands.

“It’s a privilege to be named by the City of Austin as construction manager-at-risk for this new water treatment plant,” said Blair M. Lavoie, senior vice president and director of US Operations for MWH Constructors.  “We welcome the opportunity to not only work with a city regarded as one of the best places to live in the country but also to partner on a project that promotes sustainable development for Austin’s water infrastructure and community.”

MWH Constructors is using more than 25 percent local minority and women-owned businesses during its preconstruction activities. In addition, MWH met the city’s standards by integrating innovative construction concepts for sustainability and environmental mitigation. They will also incorporate management processes to achieve or surpass the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED™ Silver rating for the facility in conjunction with the City’s design team.
