Managing Director, U.K.
As the managing director for the MWH, now part of Stantec, consultancy operation located in Warrington, England, Catherine Schefer is responsible for delivering all programs, frameworks and contracts in the water, energy, infrastructure and industry businesses in the U.K.
Driven by a passion for people and committed to enabling MWH to achieve its purpose of Building a Better World, she is leading the U.K. operation through a renewed focus on delivering exceptional client service. Ms. Schefer joined MWH in 1999. She was appointed director for the northwest region of the U.K. in 2008 and then as director of design for Europe-Africa in 2010. In this role, Schefer was responsible for re-structuring the Europe-Africa region and setting up a design group with the aim of improving efficiency, consistency and quality of design across the region (and ultimately across the globe). A large part of her role involved working with her global counterparts in Americas, Asia-Pacific and India to encourage cross regional working and knowledge sharing. She joined the MWH Board of Directors in 2015.
Diverse in her range of skills, Ms. Schefer has more than 25 years of experience in design, construction and programme management of water and wastewater infrastructure projects, having worked for both client and consulting/contracting organizations in the water utility arena. Her key skills lay in operational and client management, having been responsible for the successful bidding, mobilization and management of multimillion dollar work programs and general management/coordination of large, multidisciplinary teams.
Prior to joining MWH, Schefer held key civil engineering roles with Mott MacDonald, Taylor Woodrow and Allot & Lomax Consulting Engineers. She has also undertaken a number of key secondments during her career, notably for United Utilities to manage the business case proposal and pre-tender phase of the West East Link Main (a 35-mile clean water aqueduct across Northwest U.K.) and the Environment Agency to carry out a number of construction management roles. Ms. Schefer holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Leeds. She has chartered status and is a fellow with the Institution of Civil Engineers. She lives in Manchester, U.K. with her husband and two sons.
