Katrine Water Project |
|
"Serving the Community's Needs" What's the best way to ensure residents will accept a new water treatment plant planned near a Scottish medieval town? That was MWH's responsibility on a recent sustainable development effort for Katrine Water Project, near Greater Glasgow, Scotland. The site for this major water treatment project is just outside the popular medieval town of Milngavie. It's also in the middle of a beloved nature spot. Although the facility would supply drinking water to the Glasgow metropolitan area, there was community concern about its planned location. Community Involvement MWH's experts on sustainable development worked closely with the local community representatives to listen to these concerns, and reduce their opposition to the plans. Local input was integrated into the planning process. Public meetings were held. A website was established. And a mobile display, set up in a caravan, was moved around to popular shopping areas. We also integrated science and technology into our planning. MWH's IT capabilities allowed us to produce 3-D computer-aided designs of the planned facility. This helped the community to visualize how the plant would impact the surrounding area. The original Katrine works were once considered a masterpiece of Victorian
engineering. Today, thanks to MWH's knowledge of sustainable
development solutions, the expanded facility will continue to set
engineering standards and serve community needs, without harming the environment. |
