The design, construction and maintenance of highways and roadways are a key priority for local, state and federal governments around the world. Many governments have recently begun outsourcing road-engineering projects to private industry. Engineering expertise, cost savings and accountability are just some of the reasons.

From New Zealand to New York

Many countries have just begun to contract out their road maintenance services. New Zealand, however, has outsourced these services since 1990.

The island nation’s highways and roadways are linked to a sophisticated computerized management system, considered among the first of its kind. The country has become a world leader in transportation infrastructure management.

MWH is proud to have played a key role in this sophisticated system. We have built and managed road projects throughout the country.

In North America, our engineering, construction inspection and management projects have included highways, road interchanges and bridge replacements.

We have particular expertise in developing traffic, noise and air quality impact studies, as well as in building roads in environmentally sensitive areas and earthquake-prone regions. As a result, MWH can provide proven global expertise for a wide range of situations.

Learn more about our environmental planning expertise.

MWH capabilities include:

  • Management of road networks (e.g., strategic planning and supervision of maintenance)
  • Project work (e.g., construction management; transportation engineering; highway lighting design; traffic engineering and modeling; traffic data collection and analysis; bridge inspections, rehabilitation and replacement; surveys and mapping; utilities and drainage design; noise and air quality studies; and social and environmental impact assessments)
  • Asset management (e.g., helping clients determine how well roads and transportation structures will perform over time by examining a variety of operational, strategic, environmental, cultural and financial criteria.)
